Tourney & Trip Info

The tournament that finishes the Fly spring season is the Cal Cup International Field Hockey Tournament held in Moorpark, CA (near Simi Valley, north of LA) over Memorial Day weekend.

This is a really fun, competitive tournament, with hundreds of teams participating from all over California, the United States, and internationally.

We currently have entered a u14,u16, and u19 team. We often take multiple teams in in each age group and will add more teams, if we get enough players sign up now. Missy would also like to enter a u12 team as she has enough interest on u12 to field a team.

We would like to complete SIGN-UPS and get INITIAL DEPOSITS in for CAL CUP by Sunday 3/26/22.

Please read through all the information below. It covers everything… roster selections, costs, hotel info, travel and on-site arrangements. If you have any follow-up questions about the tournament or the trip, just let us know.

TEAM ROSTER SELECTION

Cal Cup rosters will be skill-based and selected based on Fly Coaches’ recommendations. We target announcing Cal Cup team rosters by April 2.

Not all Fly players may be offered a spot on a Cal Cup team, but we will try hard to accommodate ALL players who want to go. While we hope to be able to have all Fly players attend Cal Cup, we are only allowed a limited number of players per Cal Cup Team roster.

If you would like to be considered for team selection for Cal Cup, RSVP and hand in your trip deposit by Sunday March 26th.  Deposits will be returned to any players who are not placed on a team roster.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY?? RSVP NOW!

We need players to confirm definitively if you are interested in playing at Cal Cup. We are required to finalize hotel reservations this month AND need to confirm that we have the appropriate number of Fly teams in the tourney.

If you would like to be considered for team selection for Cal Cup, you need to do 2 things:

1) Email Coach Mary with: YES, I would like to attend Cal Cup.
You must send in this email even if you said YES on your tournament. RSVP form.
If you do not wish to participate, no need to respond.

 AND

2) Pay the non-refundable deposit. This deposit is due by Sunday, 3/26. We require this deposit now because we have already had to pay our team entry fees and hotel deposits. Deposit and trip cost details for each age group are included in the information below.

Hand in your deposit (cash or check) to Coach Mary at practice or mail in your check to:
Fly FHC
171 Main St  #271, Los Altos Ca, 94022.
Please have this check post-marked no later than March 26h.
Checks should be made out to “SJ Fly FHC”.

** We want you to play!! So, if you would like to play at Cal Cup, but cannot make the deposit payment at this time, please just let us know, and we will work out any problem like that.

FLIGHTS & TRAVEL:

All players make their own transportation arrangements to Simi Valley. Some players drive down w/family or friends. Some player fly either w/family or with the team/coaches.

Players must be down in Simi Valley by Friday night. Games start very early on Saturday morning. We will return no earlier than midday on Monday, Memorial Day.

All coaches attending Cal Cup will fly down on Friday, May 26th to Burbank Airport on an afternoon Southwest Airlines flight.

Any player who is traveling alone and/or needs transportation to/from the airport, should book the coaches’ flight (or one immediately prior), and coaches will drive players from the Burbank airport to the hotel.  If you are unable to get your player on the coaches’ flight, there are usually flights immediately before that one. Make a reservation on a prior flight, and players can wait for the coaches’ arrival at the small and very friendly Burbank airport.

At the airport, each team coach will be picking up a 15 passenger van and caravan-ing to the Posada Royale Hotel in Simi Valley, which is our team hotel for the weekend.

Coaches’ flights:

Coaches will be flying down on Friday midday and returning on Monday evening. We fly out of San Jose International Airport to Burbank airport. We will have details for the coaches flights by the end of this week.
Friday, May 26: Southwest #2125

  • departs San Jose at 1:50pm
  • arrive Burbank at 2:55pm

Monday, May 29: Southwest #2433

  • departs San Jose at 5:10pm
  • arrive Burbank at 6:20pm

If you are interested in traveling with the coaches, please email us. You will be making your own flight reservation, but we want to  know who is traveling with us.
…………………………………………………

If players do not fly down with the coaches, it will be up to the players and their families to get them to the team hotel.

Please make arrangements for you player to be at the Posada Royale Hotel on Friday night by 9pm at the latest. We will be having brief team meetings on Friday night at approximately 9:30pm.

Games start EARLY Saturday morning.

There are also burgers, Chilis, Chipotle, etc within walking distance of our hotel (which is in a very safe area).  Coaches transport players who need a ride to a nearby restaurant. Most walk in groups for meals.
  • For lunches, we usually are going in our team vans for food on the way back from games (Subway, Japanese fast food, other chain type food).

U12/U14 players will be in the care of their families for the tournament – this includes hotel supervision, transportation to/from fields and meals.

Players with family on the trip are always welcome to join their families for outside activities or meals, as long as those plans do not conflict w/team activities or guidelines. Please just ok any plans with your team coach.
